I have been looking at how many musicals are out on Broadway and Londons West End that have yet to make their way to Australia.
While I would love to see Spamalot - I cant see a role in it that would suit Tom - however - when I first read there was now a musical based on one of my all time favourite films - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - I immediately pictured Tom in the Michael Caine/Lawrence Jameson role. The suave swindler !!!!
For those that have not seen the Michael Caine & Steve Martin movie - you must rent it - its hilarious and very clever.
The story:
Based on the popular 1988 film, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson , more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health.
After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate (Scott), wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!
There are a few actors here in Aus that I could picture for the Freddy Benson role. Mostly stage actors I have enjoyed over the years who definitely have the comedic timing. Grant Piro who was in The Producers with Tom, a guy whose name I forget but he played the sidekick when I saw Singing in the Rain, comedian Adam Hills - who I think could play the doofus when necessary but also fake the suaveness.
For the female role - in the film she was in her 30s and sweet and coniving. There are quite a few female musical theatre actresses I have enjoyed in shows over the past couple of years but I think Amanda Harrison from We Will Rock You - would be the most perfect in the role. Very talented girl.
So - now I just need to find a musical theatre producer who feels like putting together a new production ! I have done all the casting for them !!!!
Actually I did meet a producer - he was Toms friend and was sitting near me at The Producers ! If only I could remember his name ! I know he was producing Fiddler on the Roof with Topol at the time.
