Birthday girl
Recent ill health was not going to stop Lady (Mary) Fairfax from celebrating her birthday last week. Under the headline The Lady is a champ in the Wentworth Courier we learn the reclusive matriarch of the once great publishing dynasty which controlled the Herald for more than a century invited 50 family and friends to her harbourside mansion, Fairwater. Tom Burlinson serenaded the birthday girl before opening the floor in the ballroom for dancing. Lady Fairfax managed to join in the fun, taking a few small steps with the help of her son, Charles, and daughter, Anna. Other guests included her personal assistant of 22 years, Lee Thomas, Professor Ross Steele and society fixture Jane Douglas.
