I went to Tom's 'Now We're swingin'' performance at Kedron Wavell Services club last night and I really enjoyed Tom's singing. He has a great voice and he performs the songs beautifully.
However, when it came to the commentary in between... you know, the parts where he's giving the historical tour of swing, I'm not sure if I really liked the way he delivered that.
Obviously Tom had it all very well rehersed... but when he delivered the commentary, it reminded me of an enthusiastic kid giving an oral presentation at High School. It was very "animated"... sort of a bit "Bindi Irwin" if you know what I mean. The intonation and inflexion of his voice was a tad, "Danoz Direct".
I just think that when you're performing great songs from the best crooners in history like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra... maybe you should try to embody just a little more of their "cool"... relax a little more, get comfortable.
I think I would have enjoyed the performance more if Tom had taken it down a notch of two and maybe tried a little harder to connect with his audience, rather than perform at us. I mean Kedrom Wavell is a fairly intimate setting. He could have jumped down off the stage and worked the room a little, maybe cracked a joke or two, teased some of the audience members a little, just to get familiar with us.
Tom stayed back after the show and signed autographs for a good half hour, so obviously he's very down to earth and not afraid to get close to his audience. I don't see why he can't project a little more of that vibe in his show. In my humble opion is would make a good show, unforgetable.
